A cryptic remark may be made out of discretion, nodding slyly to a shared secret; or posed as a riddle that the speaker dares you to unravel. A very private person may be elliptical to test the waters, socially; a certain kind of attention-seeker may seek to cultivate an air of mystery. Opaque language may be used to... gesture toward the inexpressible ... Or just to fuck with you. ;)
