Dodged a Bullet

Good news - I've just heard from my former housemate Andrew, lately of New Orleans' 9th Ward: Fortuitously, he left town a week ago Saturday to attend a family get-together in the Adirondacks--a few hours ahead of the actual evacuation--where he's been camped out, ever since.

Andrew's optimistic that his apartment--which sits on relatively high ground--may have escaped the flood waters.  But he says he's "not moving back there"--I guess it feels a bit too much like he dodged a bullet ...

That's rare good news. I can't imagine even his relatively good scenario. I had to borrow money from my dad last year just to move from one apartment to another, what with security deposit, moving fees, etc. Emotional trauma aside, the transitional costs are going to be hard even on the lucky ones!

Without a doubt--Andrew's been living in NOLA for almost a decade, now, and the place really suited his character: he's originally from Massachusetts, but his personality is all Bourbon Street. I don't see him fitting in in New England, again, and wherever he ends up, it's going to be hell picking up his whole life and starting again.

Well, I hear Capitol Hill is a great place to start over. ;)
