i took the ferry over and stayed on san juan island at this place:

i liked this b&b a LOT (yummy breakfast and the BEST cookies i have ever had! rooms were nice and comfy but could be better sound-proofed) but i also think it would be great to camp out.
i actually did have a car, i borrowed annika's, and that was convenient, but honestly, take your bike and you'll be fine - probably even better...i did a lot of walking. you'd likely want to spend most of the time on the south half (false bay, lime kiln park, maybe the american camp) anyway...
