Last month's veterinary emergency set me back wayyyyy too far for a plane trip. Right now, I'm thinking the San Juan Islands, rather than San Juan, Portland rather than Ireland ... :)
May I ask: Which island(s) did you go to? And how did you travel there, via ferry?
This is a really attractive idea. The only thing I worry about is needing a car, but since you would have been in the same situation as me, I gather that you got by without, huh?
i took the ferry over and stayed on san juan island at this place: http://www.hillsidehouse.com/index.php i liked this b&b a LOT (yummy breakfast and the BEST cookies i have ever had! rooms were nice and comfy but could be better sound-proofed) but i also think it would be great to camp out. i actually did have a car, i borrowed annika's, and that was convenient, but honestly, take your bike and you'll be fine - probably even better...i did a lot of walking. you'd likely want to spend most of the time on the south half (false bay, lime kiln park, maybe the american camp) anyway...
