We Can Rebuild It

I've been reviewing the whole run of "Nothing Like the Sun"/"Kingdom of the Wicked" over the past few weeks, thinking about some problems & possible fixes:

Problems:

1) Neglect. I've gone from once updating this blog every few days to hardly at all. For short, daily check-ins, a lot of us have moved to Facebook. Speaking of which ...

2) Audience ...? I gather that I'm not quite playing to any empty house, here. :) But the Facebook exodus & my absence from forums have cleared a lot of seats from the theater.

3) Confusion & Inappropriateness. This blog began as a notepad of random thoughts about everything, & has become a confusing mess: rambling, erratic entries; inconsistent tags, etc. I find I want something ... cleaner, now: Maybe separate blogs dedicated to specific things.

Tentative Conclusions:

A) I have a separate dedicated, day-to-day blog over on FB that is by no means neglected. DONE.

B) A lot of us are already connected on FB. I hope to keep in touch with those who are not on FB (or haven't found me there, yet) here, there, or elsewhere. If you're not on FB or can't find me, let's talk about that. IN PROCESS.

B) Housecleaning required some thought. I'm not sure how to split 1 blog into several on LJ & keep all of this history (setting up multiple accounts ...?). I do however know a way to export selected posts & comments from this "parent" blog into blogs on other platforms. So I've given it a try: created four 2nd gen blogs--dedicated to, respectively, books, film, politics, & memoir; exported selected materials from here to the appropriate places as foundations. It works. All very tidy, for sure.

I've been doing some formatting tweaks to each, but I think that at least the book blog is good to go:

The film blog should be in operation in about a week, once I settle on a workable format. IN PROCESS.

Finally: I'm just not sure what to do with the blog you're reading. I'm not turning out the lights. I like this site (except for the untidiness, which I suddenly care about)--that very appropriate notepad background, all of those cool icons, the history, the "no place like home" quality. Maybe I'll double-publish things here & elsewhere. I don't know. Any suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

Speaking for myself, I hope that you continue to update here. I've been unable to get past the privacy issues inherent to Facebook, and so don't have an account there.

I'm afraid that I haven't done a very good job of keeping up with these things, but I'd heard that there were problems with LJ, as well. Truthfully, though, I don't remember what they were trying to warn me about.

The pages I'm now setting up are at WordPress. If I'm not doing daily status updates here or on those, perhaps I'll cross-post (obviously easier once in awhile than with daily updates).

All of this is kind of giving me a headache, though .... Blogging used to be so much simpler.

i dislike crossposting. i like putting things into boxes, and having certain bits of myself only in certain places. i do know that for most people that is really a challenge, though.

Hm. I guess I'm still trying to figure out what I'm using LJ for, as I've set up blogs dedicated to most of the things I write about, now. I'm certainly not discarding it; there is a lot of unique value, here.

On reflection, I think that I've decided on where to put "Nothing Like the Sun" among my proliferating blogs. What it's NOT going to be:

Memoir:

Books:
http://ropemeridianblog.wordpress.com/

Film:
http://binxblog.wordpress.com/

Politics:

I'm not going to use it for daily updates, either. I like to do those in the form of cryptic quasi-haikus on Facebook. Facebook is the easiest forum for quick updates, & I enjoy the art/game of being elliptical. Plus, there's those privacy issues.

But that actually leaves a lot: I'm going to use the LJ "Nothing Like the Sun" to write about my current, personal goings-on, sometimes in more than two lines, and in a non-elliptical way. I haven't done that in a long time. And if any memes come around ...
