I'm not an Anne Rice fan--I've never even read one of her books.  But Rice has written a very eloquent essay on the city's history and significance, and the events of the past week: "Do You Know What It Means To Lose New Orleans?"

Dodged a Bullet

Good news - I've just heard from my former housemate Andrew, lately of New Orleans' 9th Ward: Fortuitously, he left town a week ago Saturday to attend a family get-together in the Adirondacks--a few hours ahead of the actual evacuation--where he's been camped out, ever since.

Andrew's optimistic that his apartment--which sits on relatively high ground--may have escaped the flood waters.  But he says he's "not moving back there"--I guess it feels a bit too much like he dodged a bullet ...
