It's Raining Irony
Sep. 15th, 2004 11:56 amNot long after my old company's August layoffs, my former coworker & very good friend J gave the company her notice. She'd accepted a new job in San Francisco, due to start in late September.
Having just gone through a downsizing, J's & my former employer decided that they couldn't afford to replace her. So they offered up the space she was vacating, with its enviable Space Needle view, to the other firm sharing the suite--that is, the one that'd just hired me.
So it turns out that I'm going to inherit J's old office.
J & I had a great laugh about that over lunch on her next-to-last day, talked about old times, future plans. After lunch, I went by J's favorite wine shop to buy her a going-away gift. I explained the occasion & who I was shopping for--you know, tall, red hair, you see her here all the time. The wine steward helped me find something appropriate.
Awkwardly, I met J in the doorway as I was leaving. We exchanged an amused word or two. & as I stepped out into the rain, J walked up to the steward--tall, red-hair, familiar face.
After 5:00, another friend in the office helped me to surreptitiously leave the wine bottle & a card on J's desk. Of course, J had by then already left her card & wine bottle there for me to find ...
