Be sure to raise a glass sometime today (if you may safely do so ...) to the 1933 ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed Prohibition.
I like alcohol and can deal with it in moderation. But other people, usually due to body chemistry, are not so lucky. I sometimes wonder if prohibition was a good idea and should have stayed on the books. Of course, it created a big illegal industry, even bigger than today's pot farmers I'll bet. So ultimately, yeah, legalization is the best thing. But regulation is also important.
Too true: I inserted the "if you may safely do so" line thinking of someone I know who can't (who probably isn't reading this, but still--for everyone in that boat).
Personally, I have a drink maybe a couple times a month--I don't have all that much tolerance. Still, it's hard to imagine a world where wine with dinner or my favorite fancy rum drinks would be illegal.
