sleepwhenimdead ,
sarrabellum , and I had dinner at Sofrito Rico in Ballard, last night. I've been dying to go there and have some comida puertoriqueña, ever since I stumbled on their stall at the Fremont Fair. The first big thrill was that they had coquito--puerto rican eggnog, essentially: coconut milk, rum, and nutmeg. You see, coquito is something I normally only have at Christmas, so this was pretty special to me. (And it was almost as good as the stuff that my brother makes in his basement. Heh.) Then it was off to the appetizers: empanadas con camarones and bacalaitos con arroz y habichuelas, which were super. But the main course was the best thing, pollo guisado--slow-cooked chicken that was so soft you barely needed to chew it (my sister's chicken is better, but it was close ...), spiced with sofrito and a side of potatoes with tomato sauce. Then we all got a little sugar high from dessert--a nearly-perfect flan. In short, best meal I've had in ages.
Later, we tooled around Scarecrow video for a little while trying to find a movie we could agree on (Quest for Fire or War of the Worlds or Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead?). But then we went back to their place and watched one of sleepwhenimdead's movies, Six String Samurai, which is sort of a combination of Mad Max, Yojimbo, The Wizard of Oz, and The Buddy Holly Story ... Pretty unusual.
God, I'm still full ...
