Territorial Hissings
Apr. 17th, 2006 07:27 pmSo, my plan was to gradually introduce Zoe, my ten-year-old calico to the new kitten, Ozzy. I figured that she'd initially be very jealous and territorial, but that the new arrival would ultimately be the cure for the bored, clingy, whiney state she'd been in since her old pal Puig died. I didn't expect this to happen overnight, but there's been been some progress, already. First, though, here's a picture of Mr. Oz interacting with his new big sister:

Initially, Zoe skulked and sulked. Then, as Ozzy began to roam over increasingly wide swaths of her territory, Zoe decided to put her foot down: she started hissing and growling whenever they crossed paths. Then she decided that the little interloper should be barred from some of her favorite places: chiefly, the bed, certain favorite chairs. If Ozzy went anywhere near these places, Zoe went ballistic--no teeth or claws, but lots of mean noises. But Oz only seemed puzzled by this behavior: he looked up at her, sometimes backed off, but as often as not pushed the envelope. An example of this behavior is pictured, above.
This afternoon, I caught them sunning themselves about two feet apart on the bed. When Oz got up, stretched and ventured a little deeper into Zoe's personal space, it was back to the hissing. But Ozzy's nothing if not persistent; I figure he'll wear her down, before long.
Oh, and, incidentally, Zo's been remarkably less whiney and clingy since she's had Ozzy to deal with. :)

Date: 2006-04-17 07:06 am (UTC)They sound like Zuzu & Zelda, when Zelda moved in a few months ago. Including the accelerated timeline. :) If they're anything like our two, they'll be romping and bathing each other in another 2 days.
