The One Consideration
Dec. 17th, 2006 09:34 pmIn a Lonely Place has to be one of the most affecting films noirs I've seen: I've never been that much of a Humphrey Bogart fan, but I thought that his performance here hit all of the right notes--bitter, sometimes explosive, sometimes surprisingly warm. And though I've never heard of Gloria Grahame, before, she surely makes the sanest noir heroine ever. I mean, she actually seems like a person, rather than some kind of phantasmagorical projection of knuckledragger angst. And the two of them work together remarkably well, bringing out all those noirish themes of loneliness, vulnerability, distrust, fear, etc.
(Hey, it's not like the thing is called In a Happy Place or something.)
Having come to the end of that, however, the one consideration which preoccupies me is: We got any rum in the house ...?
