The Garden of Forking Careers
Sep. 13th, 2007 05:43 pmSo there's this career meme that's going around:
1. Go to http://www.careercruising.com/.
2. Put in Username: nycareers, Password: landmark.
3. Take their "Career Matchmaker" questions.
4. Post the top umpty results.
5. Bold the ones you've done, and italicise the ones you've considered.
1. Anthropologist - I never seriously considered it, but I guess this explains why I joined lj's anthropologist community.
2. Historian - I think I'd totally love to be an historian, if I could just convince myself to go back to school.
3. Desktop Publisher
4. Computer Trainer
5. Cartoonist / Comic Illustrator - A lifetime fantasy that I gave up in my teens, when I started to find it more satisfying to render things verbally. This is a road not taken that I can actually get a little choked up about.
6. Criminologist - Um, no. There're more than enough people in law enforcement in my family and I'm just not interested in being another.
7. Animator
8. Professor - Well, yes, obviously, but of what? History? Poli Sci?
9. Activist
10. Political Aide - Another tantalizing possibility: I can really picture myself in this kind of a role.
11. Writer - All the way down there at number eleven, but this is pretty much the main idea when I think about "my career."
12. Foreign Language Instructor
13. Print Journalist - My God, do they still hire people to do this ...?
14. Critic - I do it for free, so how could I ever persuade anyone to pay me for it?
15. ESL Teacher - Meh, maybe.
16. Artist - Nobody's ever paid me for it, but if I ever decided to live in poverty ...
17. Graphic Designer
18. Medical Illustrator
19. Market Research Analyst - OK, that's just crap. How did you come up with that one, you bozos? That shouldn't be number one hundred, let alone in the top twenty.
20. Translator - My second-language skills need some serious development, but, yeah, I'd like that OK.
21. Archivist - Well, I'd get more sleep.
22. Music Teacher / Instructor - I suppose it would help if I had even a hint of rhythm or could play, well, anything?
23. Communications Specialist - What on earth does that even mean?!
24. Computer Animator
25. Public Policy Analyst - That sounds really ... useful, doesn't it?
26. Fashion Designer - Anyone who's ever seen how I dress can join me in a big ol' belly-laugh about this one ...
27. Costume Designer - See above ...
28. Set Designer
29. Clergy - I find it amusing that this option is offered irrespective of whether you believe in God.
30. Sport Psychology Consultant - *Eyeroll*
Well, at least the first few are pretty accurate ...
