saavedra77: Back to the byte mines ... (sorrow)

Leaving New Jersey on Saturday for some reason choked me up more than usual.

I don't know why: I had a great week with the family.

But the time went by so quickly. I didn't get to spend time with everyone I'd hoped to. April's kids (especially Alexis) are growing up. And I know that I won't be back there for a long while.

Anyway, leaving made me kind of maudlin, Saturday.

But my spirits picked up as the plane turned to descend into SeaTac. And as the airport shuttle rounded Beacon Hill and the city skyline hove into view I was reminded of why this is where my life is happening, now.

And made a mental note to make more of that, in 2008.

Thanks! Hey, you planning to see any movies, tomorrow?

I'm thinking I should get in one more before I have to go back to work ... :)

sounds like you have a great family, and the appreciation and love you all have for one another really comes through in your writing.

But, yeah, getting back to your life also feels good.

Happy New Year, bro. Here's to a good year.

Yeah, I'm lucky to have my brothers, sisters, their kids and kids' kids. (There's a whole other story, there--a prodigal son kind of thing. But that'll have to wait for another day.)

Happy New Year, yourself!

You've told me a little about your prodigal son (life)story. It's the stuff of novels, seriously.

My niece: yeah, when I first start to hang out with her, I have the academic veneer. She, without the slightest bit of malice, will quite suddenly get distracted by gum on her shoe or she'll unexpectedly get hit with a mad craving for cheese cake or something, and to be honest with you, I'm not used to that at all. But somehow, I'll start to have fun and just simply go with word-play and just laugh a lot, without resorting to the academic veneer. I told her I kind of appreciated her NOT listening to me when I expound on something because it totally disarms me. She tutned to me, smiled and said, "Right. Because your intelligence is not why I love you . . . How do you feel about chinese for dinner?"

I think she's one of the few people I can say loves me for being me, with nothing to prove.

And here am I getting maudlin myself, so I'll stop.

Cheers, my friend.

Dude, totally. I had a great four days in Big Bear with my family. I've been morose since I left them.

I love my life in Seattle, but I really miss the noise and bustle of my family.

I hope you get back there sooner than you think.
