People lament that there are no decent bars left on Cap Hill.

Seriously, I have no idea what they're talking about:

If you want posh, there's Barca, the Chapel, and (my personal fave) the Capitol Club. (Admittedly, the latter is currently undergoing renovations, but I'm reliably informed that it'll be back, soon.) And if you like things a little rougher around the edges, there's still Linda's, Neumos, and Clever Dunne's, to name just a few.

Then again, I've never exactly been a Creature of the Night. Probably, I've missed out on a whole raft of happenin' places by dint of not staying up late or drinking overmuch.

I've been working on it, though:

My friends Patricia and Cliff swung by my house the Friday before last to help me polish off my last bottle of holiday coquito. Afterward, we went out to Via Tribunali for fancy pizza and red wine, then to Neumos for stiffer drinks.

In other nightlife news, I got together with my usual Happy Hour buddies this past Friday, including Jen, Nicole, Jackie, Randall, Christie, and [livejournal.com profile] attam. This month's excuse derived from the fact that several members of our little clique (including moi and [livejournal.com profile] attam) have January birthdays. And Jen's been trying to get us to go to the Chapel, for a long while. Like the Capitol Club, the Chapel used to be a mortuary (or part of one). The Chapel still looks the part, too, right down to the font by the entryway (now filled with "holy mints") and the pulpit-turned-bar. I liked it: I'm amazed that I'd never ventured in before.

Maybe some residual patina of holy water kept me away.
