I celebrated my birthday this year with a trip to San Francisco, over MLK-Day weekend:
Having explored the Mission, Chinatown, the Union Square area, and Golden Gate Park on previous trips, I decided to spend Saturday walking around Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, & North Beach. I met J for Irish brunch at O'Reilly's on Green Street (on a dare having my first oyster shooter), browsed City Light Books, walked up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower, then down through this beautiful, terraced neighborhood on the Hill's northeast side to the waterfront. Saw the sea lions, of course. Then, around sunset, drove through the Presidio, saw the Palace of Fine Arts, had dinner at Capp's Corner on Powell Street in North Beach.
On Sunday, I wanted to live out part of dream I'd had recently, where I'd driven down the Pacific Coast Highway from Seattle to Baja. I settled for riding from San Francisco down to Santa Cruz with J & a mutual friend, L. The highway wound past a seemingly endless succession a beautiful beaches, many of them surprisingly empty. In Santa Cruz, we went looking for good calamari, & weren't disappointed ...
As a second birthday gift, J made me dinner--she's a killer cook--capped off with a single-candle cheesecake (I'm well past the point where I want every year represented ...). Great day, all around.
Monday, my actual birthday and MLK day, I was more on my own. J had to work, although we did meet for lunch. Afterward, I took a stroll through Yerba Buena Gardens (appropriately, the site of San Francisco's MLK memorial), before heading back to the airport & home ...
