Oh, no! I got the flu shot and it made me ill for nearly a week, which made me really wonder how bad the actual flu would have been. I got one last year, too. I get sick too often, I don't want to risk it.
No, I've never had a noticeable adverse reaction. I think that it was just hubris, this time: I usually get sick once or twice during the winter, but it's not generally this bad.
Wouldn't have helped this year, as it happens. The doctors guessed wrong this year. The two main strains of flu running around weren't included in the shot.
But yeah, always a good idea if you can. I hope you feel better!
They're doing the finishing rounds of human testing on a universal flu shot (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7171118.stm) - using a non-mutating type of protein in the virus casing means they won't have to choose a particular A-strain to include, as it'll kill all of them. A-strains are the really deadly and also the most common ones. This year, they chose the wrong ones to include in the vaccine that went out. With the universal one, that won't happen.
Should be ready for general use in the next few years. You better believe I'm getting that shit the moment it becomes available. In the past six months I've been sick 8 times. Part of it is a whole new continent of buggies to get me, and part of it is that the NHS has strict rules about who can get a flu shot. Should have gotten one before I left Seattle. :/
True to form, I started to become violently ill on Friday, and after sleeping through most of the weekend, I'm feeling the first signs of recovery on Sunday night.
No kidding! The last time that I was this sick was during my sophomore year in college. That virus had me largely incapacitated for four days. This one has absolutely consumed my weekend: I've been feeling pathetically weak, sore everywhere, nauseating dizzy, etc. I think that I was awake for all of four hours, yesterday.
I'm feeling a bit better, tonight, though. Just in time for the workweek! Hooray.

Date: 2008-03-03 03:30 am (UTC)Yeah, me too. That's why I was kicking myself on Friday as the virus really started to hit me.
On the other hand, I rarely get this sick, which I guess explains my overconfidence.
Also: they didn't offer free flu shots at work, this year, so I would have had to seek them out on my own ...

Still, I'll be extra-motivated to take all the necessary precautions, next time.
