So I'm going to Portland OR to canvass for the Obama campaign, this weekend. Looks like I'm going to have some time on my hands on Saturday night, and I've never really been to Portland, before. (Well, I've been to the airport, but you know what I mean ...) Anyone have any recommendations for fun things to do on a Saturday night in Portland after a hard day of politicking?

The people I'm driving down want to go to Voodoo Doughnut. Because I'm a book nerd, I want to at least get a look at Powell's.

But, seriously, as far as I know, those are the only places in Portland I've heard of ...

Powell's is awesome. Huge book store, they have maps they hand out at the door so you can find things. I've never spent much time anywhere else in Portland, but I have heard of Voodoo doughnut. Have fun, and good luck!

I too will be in Portland Saturday night (albeit dead tired), in case you want a small dose of Seattle in your Portland. :)

Sure: I've still got your cell phone #, so I'll try to give you a ring when we're done canvassing for the day.

All I know about Portland is that it's probably in Oregon and features in "Night of the Living Rednecks", a "song" or really a spoken story told by Jello Biafra to keep a rowdy crowd entertained while his bandmate changed a guitar string. Never been to Portland, but can recite too much of that story-song; ah, misspent youth.

But go you for getting out there and doing the democracy!

Oh, yeah--I'd forgotten about that song! Is that on the DK's "Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" or one of his solo things?

"Convenience or Death", I'm pretty sure; it isn't a solo work.

Thought so--I used to have that on cassette (remember those?); gonna have to download it from iTunes.

I'm pretty sure I went through at least three copies of that album even before it went to CD. (Which is one reason I have little guilt about getting copies of music back when Napster was still an option; I've purchased that album and others multiple times, they've had their pound of flesh from me.)

Well, you know, depends what you like to do. Powell's is definitely recommended, and Voodoo Donuts is worth a visit. I'd also recommend Rimsky Korsakoffee House for your various coffee/tea/dessert needs.

I know lots of other places, but none that randomly spring to mind without knowing what you're looking for.

OK, well, what are some nice, inexpensive places to get dinner?

Also, my supervisor suggested that Portland has some "dinner & a movie" joints along the lines of Seattle's Central Cinema (http://www.central-cinema.com/)? But she couldn't think of the name of a place.

Right! McMenamin's (http://www.mcmenamins.com/)! There's a bunch of them around town: Baghdad, Kennedy School, and the Mission all have food with movies. I don't keep track of places by price point, I generally select by what I feel like eating, but McMenamin's is pretty nice.

Alright! Now I know what I'm doing for dinner, dessert, and maybe afterward, too ... :)

Oh my gawd, I've of heard Voodoo Doughnut on the Food Network, and I've been dying to go there. Not that I really envision myself in the Pacific Northwest anytime soon. But I'm always on the lookout for fabulous doughnuts. Yes, I know they're unhealthy and I don't give a flying fig. (You just eat a lot of broccoli and beans and it balances out, right?)
